As we approach the middle of the year I think we all begin to reflect a little on our year so far, the goals we set and what’s gone well. It’s a great opportunity to think about whether you’re still heading in the direction that you want, and also the perfect time to do a few chronic pain’ checks and updates. Here’s 3 things that you can do to make sure you’re still managing your chronic pain in a way that works for you.
Update your flare-up plan
Your flare-up plan should be something that changes as your needs and life changes, different things help in different ways and you may find that your plan is missing something or includes something that is less helpful now. Use this month as a chance to go through your flare-up plan and make sure it best fits your needs still. Also check your stock of things like heat pads, over the counter medication and any accessibility tools, and restock on anything you’re low on so you’re not caught out during your next flare-up.
Do a medication check in
You’ll likely have a yearly medication check with your GP, but this month is a great chance to have a more personal check in, preparing you for your actual review. Perhaps you’re dealing with some side effects, or you’re finding that a medication isn’t as helpful anymore. If this is the case, you don’t have to wait until your official mediation review to speak to your GP about any potential changes. This is something I’m guilty of myself, and when you’ve been on a mediation for years it’s very easy to just stay on it even if you don’t feel benefits anymore. Take some time to really think about what medications help you the most and the least.
Reflect on how your pain management journey is going
Finally, take some time to personally reflect on how your pain management is going. Are you happy with your movement plan? Do you need more support with your mental health? Would you like to try something new? If things feel very static then take some time to do some research to see what support, tools and advice is out there. If you haven’t taken part already, this could be the perfect time to do the Leva Clinic’s pain management programme, our 12 module digital pain management programme. You can take things at your own pace and you’ll find advice and guidance on everything from movement to medications in there.
The beginning of the year isn’t the only time we can reflect and set new goals, a mid-year check in is the perfect way to make sure you’re still on track!
