Project Twenty21 is a nationwide study researching the benefits of medical cannabis in various conditions, including chronic pain, anxiety, and epilepsy – to name a few.

In this episode, Chris and Zoha speak to Professor Mike Barnes and Mags Houston from Project Twenty21. They are part of a research team that is building an evidence-base to educate healthcare practitioners and grow the scientific awareness of cannabis in healthcare. In the UK, GPs cannot prescribe medical cannabis unless under a pain specialist consultant. Project Twenty21 is attempting to tackle this and make cannabis more accessible to those who need it. The episode outlines the holistic benefits of the treatment and the relative lack of side effects compared to traditional opioid painkillers.

Users of medical cannabis have reported a variety of ways their life has been affected, including improving sleep quality, appetite and anxiety. Whilst cannabis is not a “be all, end all” therapy, it should be seen as an option in the treatment management plan for someone with chronic pain.

Early research developments show promising signs regarding the use of cannabis. Recent studies have shown that medical cannabis can increase someone’s quality of life score by around 50%. Project Twenty21 is still actively recruiting patients, with hundreds signing up every months, and Leva Clinic is one of the only clinics that is currently offering patients the opportunity to register with the study.
